In my acoustic harmonies band Laurel Canyon (specialize in CSN&Y stuff) one of my bandmates has, up to joining this band, always played on his own. He’s a very good player, and has good meter, but there are times when misses a beat or something, kind of like a timing hiccup. Thing is, he’s used to playing on his own, and those things don’t matter much when there is no other accompaniment.

But it matters now.

During practices, we are coaching him on following step 1 on the list, keeping time with his foot. When we play the Paul Simon song “April, Come She Will”, we are having him count in to get used to setting a tempo for the other players. And it’s funny. Helping him makes me realize I don’t do the same as much as I should, especially when I am playing guitar instead of bass.

PS. Where the heck have you been Benji! I almost took the blog off my links list because I thought you had shut this one down. Absolutely glad to see you’re still around!

Mike aka Sonicfrog.

I started on playing bass out of necessity for a band and I naturally grew into it. I also learned rhythm acoustic and lead from just my love of music and I’ve always loved setting the tone and the true rhythm with the bass… But now a days I feel like its become a burden… That the only reason I play it is because no one else wants to… Yes I enjoy it but when it becomes hey you’re up here because we don’t want to be nor does anyone else it feels like it looses a bit of purpose like if you walked away it would make no difference. Of course I and we all know that is not true, but bass is very understated in what it can do and the technicality of executing proper transitional runs instead of some solo that the band doesn’t care where you take it cause it is for show instead of structurally for tone. Thats how I feel all burden no fame.

I just thought it was a good example. I think I play that part with finger 3 covering both the D and the G and the pinky free.
Eye of the Tiger may be another similar one where you can play it with with your fingers ready for frets 1 through 4, but the tab uses the 6th fret on the E string.

Comment on One Finger One Fret by Wulf http://bassguitarblog.com/2009/02/one-finger-one-fret/comment-page-1/#comment-176329 Wed, 09 Jan 2013 16:33:32 +0000 http://bassguitarblog.com/?p=608#comment-176329 If you needed sustain then you could also use the open D and G strings to complete the riff.

That said, you’ve inspired me to listen back to the song in question and the (1971 Deep Purple) recording is much more about punch than sustain. On a standard four string bass, my first six notes of the riff (G D G’) would probably be played with first finger on the third fret of the E string, third finger on the fifth fret of the A string and fourth finger on the fifth fret of the D string. The second half of each line is varied each time round but sounds to me like something that is going to require moving around however many fingers you assign per fret.

If your problem is losing your place on the neck, try practicing in a darkened room. You should be able to keep track of where you are without having to clamp your hand in one position and without having to keep glancing down.

BTW, I’m fairly sure that the A# is in fact a Bb (key of Gm).

The A# on the E string can be held while playing the other notes if you wanted.

In as much as the tuning is “designed”, it is based on what had become established for double bass where increased scale length and string tension make a three semitone stretch and more shifting a necessity.

Tab is not always a reliable guide but, in this case, I think it is a pretty good path through the notes and one that (based on a fairly substantial amount of playing experience) I think I could sustain comfortably for much longer than the variant you suggest.

For example take the bass tab written on a site of Smoke on the Water, though I do believe this might be how it is played:

————————-
—–5—–5—–5——-
—5—–5—–5—1-3-5-
-3—–3—–3———–

This requires you to move your hand. Change the A# to the E string and you don’t have to move your hand. Though there is an E# you have to hit at another time…

That’s just an easy example off of the top of my head. I don’t really find this to be a debate. It is easy to play this way and the tuning is designed this way on purpose. You can also more easily play without looking at your hand.
