Fishin’ For Grips is designed to be the definitive approach to learning chord-melody on the bass guitar. I have seen Todd Johnson play many times, and his chordal and melody playing are striking, a true jazz master. 84 minutes of DVD footage and the book aim to clearly illustrate how Todd does what he does, and to provide a clear and concise methodology.

Pre-orders are being taken at www.toddjohnsonmusic.com and will ship as soon as the DVDs and books are released.

Todd is simultaneously releasing his new CD. With his usual brand of self-deprecating humour it is titled ”One Good Looking Guy?” It is a joyful collaboration between Todd Johnson and Jim Stinnett, featuring their own compositions (Todd Johnson on 6–string electric bass and Jim Stinnett on acoustic & electric bass), supported by Dino Govoni on saxes and Joe Hunt on drums.

The CD is priced at $15 and also available from www.toddjohnsonmusic.com. You can hear the tracks on Todd’s ReverbNation page and check out Todd’s tour dates on the site too. Well worth getting out to seem him!

Fresh into my inbox this morning was the International Institute of Bassists newsletter (on-line here). I first came across the IIB a few years back, when I was at BassQuake in California, USA. I still have the IIB t-shirt, which is looking a little old and faded now. The IIB itself has aged considerably better!

The IIB was founded in 1997 by bassist Cliff Enge, so it is over ten years old now. How time whizzes by! The August 2008 newsletter includes a number teasers to give you an idea of what you get when you subscribe. Benefits include downloadable lessons (by instructors including Michael Manring, Todd Johnson, Ray Riendeau and Jim Stinnett), interviews and videos covering concerts, clinics and instruction.

Currently lifetime subscription of the IIB is $50 – 1/2 off the normal subscription rate. Lots of goodies included, so it might be a good investment for you (the IIB have monthly giveaways, MP3 Bass Samplers, and a library of lesson material). I think I might just have talked myself into signing up (sign up is here) – I’ll be right back…

OK, there we go. I’m a lifetime member – Doing my bit to keep it international! http://www.instituteofbass.com
