The 10 Things Professional Bass Players Never Do
A thought provoking list from Scott Divine, of the amazing Scott’s Bass Lessons:
- Never Be Late (actually, be early!)
- Don’t turn up under prepared (always be prepared!)
- Be enthusiastic about the gig (never bring others down!)
- Do NOT noodle in between songs (btw that includes during sound check!)
- Rehearsals are not personal practice time (do your practice at home!)
- Don’t bring bad vibes to a situation (if things are going bad, don’t make them worse!)
- Use reliable gear (keep it in order and make sure it is solid)
- Have a solid repertoire (know songs, lots of songs…)
- Don’t be locked into one genre (have a wide repertoire).
- Respect the type of gig you’ve been hired for (a slap bass solo from the pit at a musical won’t get you an invite back ;)).

What would your 10 must do’s be?
Good tips as usual from Scott. Discipline and restraint!
30 years ago I played covers in dance bands. I then began a non-music career and joined only bands doing originals. I’m now interested in building up a repertoire of the most common rock, blues and ballads that an over 40 crowd likes.
I know these vary depending on region but if anyone has a good list I would be appreciative.
That’s a good question Doug – I suspect it will vary a lot by country?
