Solo Bass
A quiet couple of days on the blog, due to a couple of VERY busy days off the blog – some of which will become apparent very shortly. There are still a few hours left (as I post this) to enter the Upton Bass pick up competition, before we roll into December.
The night before last we were delighted to host Lobelia and Steve Lawson for a fantastic house concert – more on that soon. Speaking of Steve Lawson, and to the point of the post, I stumbled across an extensive list of bass resources here on the solo bass network. There are links to accoustic bassists, electric bassists and other solo bass resources.
One of my favourite solo bass pieces is Victor Wooten’s rendition of “Amazing Grace” – you can find it here on last.FM, and click through to a video from there. I first saw this on a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones DVD (here on Amazon UK: Bela Fleck – Live and Amazon US: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones – Live at the Quick) and had it in the DVD player on Friday. The arrangement uses lots of harmonics, but (Steve assures me) it is in standard tuning. If you haven’t seen it before, it will definitely stretch your brain’s concept of what a bass can do on its own.
Whilst you are on Last.FM, and still on the subject of solo bass, you can also check out Steve Lawson’s tracks here on Steve’s Last.fm page. You can get yourself three of Steve’s albums at once for Christmas – Behind Every Word/ Grace And Gratitude/ …Open Spaces – at his on-line shop.
