A while ago, I did Norm Stockton’s “The Art of Groove” course on musicdojo.com (Norm pictured here, from his 2003 visit to the UK – time you came back to visit Norm š ). An email just landed in my inbox, which reminded me about this great way to build your bass skills.
If you can’t get out to a tutor, MusicDojo brings to tutor to you, in a cozy on-line class. You can get a feel for how MusicDojo works with one of the free 5 day classes (see the bottom right of their page here).

Having mentionedĀ BassQuake Faultline, thank you to those he brought my attention to the UK’s very own Bass Day in Manchester on November the 9th.
Tickets are Ā£20 ahead of time (I think that’s about $4,000,000 at the current exchange rate š ), a bit more on the door. Sounds like good value. [More…]

Ooo… Looks interesting: Bass Gear Magazine. It isĀ free on-line – after your register, a link and password gets sent to your inbox. You can read it in your trusty old web browser. I had the opportunity to see Lightspeed ChampionĀ last week, at KoKo in London, as part of the iTunes festival. I’ve bee a long time fan, since bumping into them (well, lead Dev Hynes) on a plane last year. However, this was the first time I’d seem them live.
It was a great set (and a good crowd at the venue). What struck me most was that almost everyone in the band took a turn on bass (with only the violinist not picking up the 4 string wonder). It made me wonder two things:
- How many bassists are multi-instrumentalists?
- How comfortable would you be playing someone else’s bass during a gig?
Having a broader outlook than just bass guitar is always a good thing – expanding your sense of melody, harmony andĀ rhythm.
I didn’t manage to convince these hardcore Lightspeed Champion fans to take up bass, which is a shame (another one of those
bass not forĀ girls say the girls moments). They did put up with me taking photos over their shoulder – fair deal.
